<p><span data-contrast="auto">Last Jan. 20, at the DEMO DAY of <a href="https://www.zeroacceleratorcleantech.com/2batch">ZERO, the Italian Cleantech Accelerator by CDP</a>, the GEVI team presented the small-scale model of its intelligent wind turbine, and it was a remarkable success.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Entirely designed and built by the three founders, GEVI&#8217;s first 600 W turbine combines lightweight materials, such as ecoPLA </span><span data-contrast="auto">and </span><span data-contrast="auto">fibreglass</span> <span data-contrast="auto">in its blades, </span><span data-contrast="auto">along with </span><span data-contrast="auto">aluminum in its internal </span><span data-contrast="auto">frame</span><span data-contrast="auto">, to create an optimal </span><span data-contrast="auto">fast development</span> <span data-contrast="auto">solution.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">It is equipped with </span><span data-contrast="auto">the </span><span data-contrast="auto"><strong>team-designed</strong> custom blade pitch control and load management </span><span data-contrast="auto">systems</span><span data-contrast="auto">, as well as the first Artificial Intelligence software (version 0.1) that ensures the turbine adaptability to any wind condition. </span><span data-contrast="auto">Specifically, based on the wind parameters recorded continuously by the anemometer, the AI provides real-time guidance to the blade pitch control system to angle the blade pitch, </span><span data-contrast="auto">to </span><span data-contrast="auto">maximise</span><span data-contrast="auto"> the torque throughout the all rotation</span><span data-contrast="auto"> and thus extract as much energy as possible </span><span data-contrast="auto">while</span><span data-contrast="auto"> resolving turbulences issues.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<blockquote><p><em>GEVI&#8217;s smallest model measures 1.7 m in height and 1.8 m in diameter and can produce <strong>1 MWh of clean energy per year</strong> with an average wind speed of 5.5 m/s.</em></p></blockquote>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">As a result, this turbine is suitable for domestic and off-grid applications, as it can meet <a href="https://www.arera.it/it/dati/eegvarprezzi.htm">1/3 of a household&#8217;s average annual energy demand</a></span><span data-contrast="auto">. It can also be easily integrated with a photovoltaic system to increase the share of clean energy produced and intended for self-consumption.</span><span data-contrast="auto">  </span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">The </span><span data-contrast="auto">installed</span> <span data-contrast="auto">turbine is undergoing comprehensive field testing to collect data and assess its performance prior to </span><span data-contrast="auto">the <strong>POC</strong></span><span data-contrast="auto"><strong> installation at the University of Pisa</strong>&#8216;s Department of Economics and Management</span><span data-contrast="auto">.</span><span data-contrast="auto"> </span><span data-contrast="auto">The data gathered from these tests will provide valuable insights into the turbine&#8217;s </span><span data-contrast="auto">behavior</span><span data-contrast="auto"> and performances</span><span data-contrast="auto">,</span> <span data-contrast="auto">and help to </span><span data-contrast="auto">optimise</span><span data-contrast="auto"> its design and functionality.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">The next step for GEVI is to manufacture the turbine using fully recycled and recyclable materials, to make</span> <span data-contrast="auto">its turbines</span><span data-contrast="auto"> completely sustainable.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span data-contrast="auto">GEVI turbines can be a fundamental resource to provide power to many industrial and remote sites where a stable power source is necessary and grid electricity is not always available.  For example,<strong> O</strong></span><b><span data-contrast="auto">ff-grid</span></b><span data-contrast="auto"> sites that they’re not physically connected to the power grid or any other type of utility, so they must use only energy that comes from their own sources.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span data-contrast="auto">Such off-grid and semi-off-grid sites would benefit from a source of clean electricity capable of cutting down the electricity transport cost or eliminating the complexity of expanding the grid. That losses are not negligible in fact they <a href="https://ee-ip.org/it/article/7-grandi-sfide-di-una-rete-elettrica-e-le-loro-soluzioni-1812">are estimated to be</a> about 20% of the production in India as well as most African countries, more than 50% in Haiti and Libya, and more than 15% on average in South America. Nevertheless, even in the most advanced transmission infrastructures such as in the United States or China, <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.ELC.LOSS.ZS">the average transport loss accounts for about 6 % of the total produced electricity</a>.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span data-contrast="auto">The </span><b><span data-contrast="auto">nautical industry</span></b><span data-contrast="auto"> is another highly polluting sector whose environmental impact can be sharply reduced by exploiting wind power. In 2020, ship transport was the source of <a href="https://www.legambiente.it/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Porti-Verdi-Enelx_Legambiente.pdf">about 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions</a>, but these percentages are set to increase significantly as international ship traffic grows. Moreover, numerous studies on emissions from port activities reveal that ships at berth and during maneuvers are extremely polluting and they are <a href="https://www.legambiente.it/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Porti-Verdi-Enelx_Legambiente.pdf">responsible for 80% of total port emissions</a>.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span data-contrast="auto">GEVI’s turbines can effectively power ship subsystems during navigation and when they are docked in port (<em>Cold Ironing</em>), saving tons of dangerous emissions. Moreover, the structure of the GEVI turbine can be adapted to a wide variety of ships, up to the largest merchant ships or cruise ships, taking advantage of the strong marine wind intensity. </span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span data-contrast="auto">Even today, the installation of renewable energy systems in the nautical environment represents a difficult challenge to tackle. These systems have never been implemented before in a real-world application, but they could greatly help decarbonizing this</span> <em>hard-to-brake-down</em> <span data-contrast="auto">sector.</span></p>
